June 8: International Oceans Day

Today, June 8th is the World Oceans Day, a day in which the United Nations highlights the importance of the ocean and its role in sustaining life on Earth.

CAMEC renews its commitment to the ocean every day by investing in the development of machines and plants for the recovery and valorization of plastic materials, so that they can be reused as raw materials and contribute to a sustainable circular economy.

“The ocean is the lung of our planet, producing 50% of the oxygen we breathe, and is a vital source of food and medicine for billions of people. The purpose of the day is to inform the public about the impact of human actions, mobilize and unite the population in a global project for sustainable ocean management,” writes the United Nations.

Almost 4 billion years ago, the ocean was the cradle of the first unicellular organisms, marking the beginning of life on Earth. Today, it continues to be the source of life for humanity and many other living organisms.

The ocean is home to the majority of the planet’s biodiversity and is the primary source of protein for over a billion people worldwide. Additionally, the economy linked to this resource provides jobs for millions of people.

However, the ocean is facing serious ecological risks: due to climate change, the waters are warming and acidifying, causing the death of many marine species, and the constant pollution is causing plastic waste to accumulate in the ocean, with an estimated 8 million tons of plastic waste entering the ocean every year.

The theme of World Oceans Day this year is “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods,” a project that inaugurates a decade of challenges to achieve the goal of “conserving and sustainably using the ocean, seas, and marine resources” by 2030.

How can we participate in celebrating World Oceans Day as citizens?

As individuals, each of us has a role to play in promoting sustainability and raising awareness about the ocean. Some ways to do this include:

  1. INFORM YOURSELF – learn about the ocean and its importance: the United Nations has organized a great digital event to tell the story of the ocean and its relationship with humanity. You can also watch documentaries and films about the ocean, such as Seaspiracy; A Plastic Ocean; Blackfish; My friend in the deep sea; Chasing Coral.
  2. CONSUME SUSTAINABLY – help reduce the impact of human activities on the ocean by making sustainable choices: choose products that are certified as sustainable, such as seafood that is caught or farmed in a way that does not harm the environment, and avoid products that are made from endangered species, such as coral or shark.
  3. REDUCE PLASTIC WASTE – reduce your use of single-use plastics, such as plastic bags, straws, and water bottles, and choose products that are made from recycled materials.
  4. TAKE CARE OF NATURE – take care of the ocean and its inhabitants by not littering, not disturbing wildlife, and participating in collective clean-up initiatives.
