Fixed or mobile shredder? Here’s how to choose!

An industrial shredder is a machine that can meet the needs of many production contexts and correctly treat, reducing their size, many types of waste destined for disposal.

The structure of a shredder can vary depending on the type of material it is called upon to treat and the characteristics of the context in which the machine is used, but it typically includes the presence of a variable number of shafts (one, two or four) on which specific blades are mounted, which perform the function of cutting and shredding the material until it is reduced to a size set by the user.

The type of motorization and the loading and unloading modes of the materials can vary depending on the different uses of the shredder, the frequency of use, the amount of material to be treated and so on, and it is for this reason that CAMEC shredders are always designed in a personalized way according to customer needs, and are therefore truly customized machines.

Fixed shredder vs mobile shredder

The structure of a shredder, as we have said, can be personalized in many ways, but there is an important element to consider when designing a machine of this type: the presence or absence of a movement system that allows the machine to be moved according to different needs.

Normally, in fact, shredders are designed as fixed machines, which are fed through specific loading systems that involve the use of a conveyor belt or a hopper. The waste, previously collected and selected according to different needs, is then brought physically to the shredder, to be loaded into it by an operator who can act manually or using specific tools.

However, there is an alternative to this system, namely the choice of a mobile shredder, mounted on tracks or towable (movable and towable on wheels). A machine of this type can comfortably be moved within the plant, making it possible to bring the shredder to the materials to be treated, rather than the other way around. This allows to optimize the processing times and reduce to a minimum the phase of movement of the waste, because the mobile shredder can be easily positioned in the most favorable position for loading before being put into operation.

Fixed or mobile? Here's which one to prefer

A mobile shredder and a fixed shredder can guarantee comparable performance in terms of efficiency of waste treatment, as well as reliability and customization possibilities. The choice of one type of tool instead of the other depends exclusively on the organization of the reality in which the shredder will operate, and in particular on the variety of processes that are carried out within the plant.

A company that treats large quantities of a single type of waste can - in general - benefit from the choice of a fixed shredder, as the advantage of being able to bring the machine to the waste is not particularly significant. Different is the case of a plant where waste is differentiated and divided before different types of materials are sent for treatment, as happens for example in an ecological island, but not only. In this case, the possibility of having a single tool that can move within the plant and treat different types of waste in sequence without the need for specific loading and movement can generate a significant time saving and a concrete increase in the efficiency of the processing cycles performed by the plant.
