Wood waste shredding: the benefits of a mobile shredder

Crushing wood waste into small pieces, to obtain wood chips of a predefined size, is an optimal solution for protecting the environment and recovering a valuable material that can be recycled 100% and valued economically.

The recycled wood can be used to produce chipboard panels for construction, can be transformed into compost for agricultural use, can become the raw material for new products or can become a renewable energy source, such as biomass (biomass is the biodegradable part of urban or industrial waste, and wood falls into this category). Wasting a material as versatile as wood by sending it to a landfill is not only economically unwise, but also harmful to the environment: the natural degradation process of wood in an anaerobic environment like a landfill produces methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming when released into the atmosphere.

For all these reasons, it is crucial to treat wood waste properly, but also potentially problematic, as wood waste is voluminous and bulky, and its crushing creates logistical difficulties.

The types of wood that can be recycled

Centers that handle wood waste treatment typically crush both virgin wood, coming from tree trunks and branches, and already processed wood that needs to be disposed of. Processed wood can come in many forms: a particularly complex case is that of wood used to make reels for electrical cables or other materials used in industry and construction: waste of this type has a particular shape and can be very large and heavy, making the crushing process more complicated.

Crushing wood for recycling

The first step in wood treatment is to crush it, to reduce the material size, remove any impurities (typically glass or metal) and obtain wood chips that can be easily collected and sent to recycling centers.

This first step of wood crushing can be performed using a high-performance fixed crusher, capable of effectively treating a material that is not easy to crush, or with a mobile crusher. This particular machine, which is equipped with a movement system that allows it to be positioned close to the waste and moved to the most suitable location for loading, can simplify the treatment of wood waste, especially when dealing with heavy or bulky materials.

CAMEC has developed two different models of mobile crushers for this purpose: the mobile crusher DRM 475, available in both self-propelled and towable versions, with a screen for selecting the material output, and the mobile crusher DRM 650, propelled by tracks and perfect for treating large-sized waste.

These machines are the perfect solution for companies that produce large quantities of wood waste, but can also be used successfully in ecological islands or waste treatment centers: the ability to easily position them close to the waste to be treated, combined with the efficiency of the blades and the presence of accessories designed to meet the needs of different production realities, allows for safe and fast reduction of the material size.
