Why choose a custom-designed waste treatment plant

A proper treatment of all waste allows, in fact, to limit the littering phenomenon, to reduce the amount of materials sent to landfills, to prevent any contamination of the soil and water tables and to recover the best materials that can be reused present in the discarded objects. In this way, it is possible not only to reduce the impact of waste on the environment, but also to start virtuous processes of circular economy, in compliance with Italian laws and EU directives, and to generate a spin-off that creates jobs and allows to valorize waste, with great benefits for the local economy.

But what does it mean to manage waste correctly, and which technological solutions allow to build really performing waste treatment plants? Here are CAMEC's answers:

Waste management: a complex process
The first element to consider when talking about correct waste management is that we are facing a very complex processing cycle. Each object that is thrown away, in fact, goes through various consecutive steps, all necessary for its effective valorization. These include:

  • Collection of waste through door-to-door collection systems, waste collection bins or direct delivery by citizens to ecological islands managed by municipalities
  • Transport of waste from the collection site to the treatment plant
  • Treatment itself, with separation of different materials that are then sent to recycling plants
  • Recycling or recovery of reusable materials
  • Storage in landfills or other repositories of the non-recoverable waste component 

Each step of this process requires the intervention of different professional figures and the use of ad hoc industrial technologies, necessary to obtain the best from waste both from an economic and safety point of view for operators and environmental protection.

How a waste treatment plant works
A waste treatment plant is a complex system that involves the use of a series of carefully designed and sized machines, depending on the type of waste to be treated, the amount of material to be managed and the needs of the operators working within the plant. 
The variables that must be taken into account when designing a plant of this type are therefore many, and it is for this reason that each plant must be designed and sized in a personalized way, choosing the types of machinery most suited - and the related options - based on the needs of the specific plant. This is why all CAMEC machinery and shredders are designed to be customizable and can therefore be adapted to a wide range of needs.

Normally, a waste treatment plant involves the presence of a loading area where waste is conveyed onto a conveyor belt. If the material is delivered in bags, as is often the case in plants for treating urban waste, an apri-sacchi or lacerator can also be used to facilitate the proper distribution of the material on the conveyor belt.

Subsequently, the waste can undergo various types of treatment:

  • manual selection, necessary to extract recyclable materials, WEEE or other objects containing precious or hazardous materials that have been improperly disposed of in the waste to be disposed of
  • shredding using single-shaft, two-shaft or four-shaft shredders, to reduce the size and volume of the waste to be disposed of; the use of a selection grid allows to determine the maximum diameter of the materials in output, to simplify the subsequent processing stages
  • screening using screens of different types, to separate light waste from heavier waste
  • pressing and compacting to reduce the volume of waste

 

At the end of these and other treatments, defined during the plant's design phase, the non-recoverable waste component reaches the unloading area, to be properly disposed of. The separated materials are instead sent to further recovery and recycling treatments, which can be carried out within the plant itself or entrusted to external parties.
